When the narrator goes away for the summer to her family’s primitive cabin, she is “surprised and horrified” when Buddy, Charlie, and Trish show up for a visit. They take her out on a picnic and Buddy gives her his identification bracelet. When the narrator returns to school she continues her relationship, but Buddy becomes more of an “obligation” (54). The relationship ends when she refuses to go out with him because of an impending storm, which turns out to be a hurricane. The disappointment of the storm’s wreckage is compared with her lack of feeling about the breakup, likening it to the “flatness of the water, the melancholy light” (58).

The challenge of describing a building whose importance relies not only on its architecture but also on its emotionally connected function as a holy space proves difficult to the husband, who is unaccustomed to expressing any real emotions aside from bitterness and sarcasm. The husband takes on the request with a kind of obsession: “Say my life depended on it” (277), which in a sense it does. ” (278). Thinking about this question, the husband confesses his lack of belief in religion, which he recognizes makes it impossible for him to fully describe a cathedral.
