Cultural studies as a movement has in many ways been salutary. It has successfully dethroned the narrow, stifling formalism that dominated Anglo-American literary criticism and theory from the time of Leavis and New Criticism to the last gasps of American deconstruction. But it has hardly answered, let alone disposed of, Sartre’s nagging question. The fact of the matter is that most of us still consider ourselves teachers of literature, even if we no longer know what that is. In this essay, then, I will take up Sartre’s challenge, but I propose to move beyond the Marxian and existential terms in which he framed the question toward a post-Freudian definition founded on the works of Slavoj Zizek, Julia Kristeva, and Jacques Lacan.
