If we are serious about empowering students, then our curricula should look at how we can better distribute the wealth so that 20 percent of America’s children do not need to live below the poverty line. I resent going into an educational institution that insists on discussing poverty. Notice I said discuss it, not eradicate it. Let’s discuss how poverty prevents us from being effective educators. If poverty and economics mean that much to us, then let’s become serious about looking for ways to distribute the wealth more equitably.

The future of the Black race literally lies in the hands of White female teachers. What I observed in Minneapolis is occurring throughout the country. Of the two classes in which the children were focused, one had a White female teacher and the other had a Black teacher. In the two classes where the kids were bouncing off the walls, one had a White teacher and the other a Black teacher. So the race card could not be played. Nor could the poverty card. This variance in student behavior was not because of the race of the teacher or income of the home.

The most important chart in this chapter is listed below. 30 Black Poverty Ratio of black to white wealth and income 7 Let’s review what this chart teaches us. The average White family earns $44,000 in income compared to only $28,000 for African American families. African Americans earn 64 percent of White income. Ironically, this is close to how the Constitution defined Blacks over 200 years ago, that is, as being three-fifths of a person. If you review the Black-White income ratio for the past 40 years, it shows the consistency of racism.
